Walk into any serious training hall and you'll see three different belts on three different lifters, each certain that theirs is the right call. They're all correct, for their own training. This guide breaks down how each type of belt works, what it's built for, and how to land on the one that actually suits your lifting, not just the one with the biggest logo.
The Three Belt Types
Prong Belts: Single & Double
A prong belt works like a heavy-duty trouser belt: a buckle with one or two metal prongs threading through pre-punched holes in thick leather. That simple mechanism gives you a level of manual control a lever can't match. Cinch it down for a max-effort single, or loosen it a notch for a high-volume set.

Lever Belts
If maximum support is the brief, the lever wins. The mechanism holds the belt exceptionally tight, giving the abdomen a solid wall to brace against and increasing intra-abdominal pressure through the heaviest compound lifts. There's a mental edge too: being locked firmly into position steadies the nerves before a near-maximal attempt. Hybrid Belts
Since CrossFit's arrival in 2000, gym culture has leaned functional, with Olympic weightlifting sitting alongside gymnastics and conditioning in the same session. That's the gap the hybrid belt fills. Built from EVA rather than rigid leather, it flexes with the body, absorbs shock, and fastens with a Velcro strap for quick changes between movements.

IPF Approval, Explained
If you compete, your belt needs to meet a standard. The International Powerlifting Federation is the global governing body for the sport, recognised by the General Association of International Sports Federations, and it publishes an approved equipment list every three years. Important
Matching these dimensions isn't enough on its own. The belt must be made by a brand on the official IPF Approved List to be legal for competition. How to Choose

Competitive Powerlifting
Look for maximum support with full IPF approval. Prong vs. lever comes down to preference.
Olympic Weightlifting
Support without restricting the mobility explosive lifts demand. The IWF permits belts up to 12cm wide, though most lifters prefer a tapered profile.
General Strength & CrossFit
A hybrid belt balances comfort, support and versatility for lifters moving between disciplines, and for anyone new to wearing a belt at all.
Dipping Belts
A different category entirely: a dipping belt doesn't support a lift, it becomes part of it. As bodyweight pull-ups and dips get easier, a dipping belt lets you add plates around your waist and keep progressing. Not really. Anatomy and training style matter far more than gender. Three factors to weigh:
- Torso length: standard width is 4 inches, but shorter torsos often do better in a 3-inch belt that won't dig into the ribs or hips.
- Waist-to-hip ratio: rigid leather doesn't conform to pronounced curves, so a hybrid's EVA construction can fit more naturally where waist and hips differ significantly.
- Lifting style: powerlifters usually want a rigid leather prong or lever belt; Olympic lifters, CrossFitters and general gym-goers often prefer a tapered or hybrid design.
